Skin barrier

The outermost layer of Skin cells (Stratum corneum) plus the lipid matrix (composed of ceramides, cholesterols and fatty acids) that holds those cells together. The Skin barrier is like a brick wall; The cells are the bricks, and the intracellular lipid matrix is the mortar. It keeps environmental agressions (like pollution and UV rays) and harmful microorganisms out while holding the water within the Skin to maintain Skin hydration. Redness, inflammation, dehydration, itchiness or acne can be signs of a compromised Skin barrier where the barrier can’t lock in moisture whereas irritants and harmful microorganisms can penetrate the Skin easier.
